Caning
Caning is a method of weaving chair seats and other furniture either while building new chairs or in the process of cane chair repair. The material used in caning chairs is derived from the peeled bark or skin of the rattan vine native to Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia. Strand or hand caning is the most well known of the seat weaving designs and patterns. This traditional chair seat weaving method is woven by hand with individual strands of cane, through holes drilled in the perimeter of the seat, thereby creating the familiar octagon (8-sided), pattern. |
Rush Seats
A rush seat has a cord like material wrapped around the four dowels framing the square of a seat. Only the very best materials are used. Paper twist or paper rush comes in a continuous strand and is very durable, lastly considerably longer than natural rush. It’s frequently used to weave seats on Colonial style, mule-ear style and other post and rail modern chair seats, and also used in weaving wicker furniture from the 1910s-1940s. Rush Seats are painstakingly handwoven. They require a lot of pulling, tugging, and adjusting to complete a beautiful rush seat. |
Upholstery
All upholstery is done by hand. Traditional upholstery is a craft which evolved over centuries for padding and covering chairs, seats and sofas, before the development of sewing machines synthetic fabrics and plastic foam. Both repair of existing upholstery and or completely new upholstery is provided as a service. |
Quality Finish & Staining
Furniture finishes can be classified into several basic types: varnish, penetrating resin, shellac, lacquer, wax, and oil. All these finishes are designed to protect the wood and to bring out its natural beauty, and all of them can be assessed in terms of how well they accomplish these objectives. Only the highest quality finishing work is done. Primer is applied to the furniture's surface to fill in pores and other irregularities in the grain, allowing stains and paint to more easily bond with the wood. After the primer has dried, the furniture is hand-sanded. Sanding creates a slightly rough texture on the surface, further helping the stains and polish to adhere to the wood |
Wood Carving
As part of the furniture repair process, wood carving service is provided. All carving work is handcrafted, and is done with extreme care. Broad strokes are carefully added to further define edges. They take into account grain direction and the design's location on the surface to avoid splintering or chipping the wood. Facial features and clothing folds are slowly added to create accents and more depth. |
